About this tool
Notify search engines that your sitemap has changed. Enter your sitemap URL and the tool submits it through IndexNow, the open protocol used by Bing, Yandex, Seznam and others to discover new and updated content faster.
How to use it
- Enter the full address of your sitemap, for example
https://example.com/sitemap.xml. - Run the ping.
- Read the response from each service.
What happens behind the scenes
The tool sends your sitemap address to the IndexNow endpoint and shows the reply. It also explains the status of the older Google and Bing "sitemap ping" addresses, which were retired in 2023 and no longer do anything.
What about Google?
Google does not use IndexNow. To tell Google about changes, submit your sitemap in Google Search Console and keep the lastmod dates accurate — Google reads them when it revisits.
Getting full IndexNow support
For guaranteed acceptance, IndexNow asks you to host a small key file on your own site. Many CMS plugins, such as Yoast or Rank Math, can set this up for you and notify engines automatically whenever you publish.
Limitations
A successful submission only tells engines that something changed; it does not guarantee crawling, indexing or rankings.
A worked example
A news site publishes several stories a day. Submitting its sitemap after each batch tells Bing and other IndexNow engines that new content is ready, so stories appear in their results sooner than waiting for the next scheduled crawl.
Understanding the responses
- 200 / 202 – the submission was accepted.
- 400 – the request was malformed, often a missing or incorrect address.
- 403 – the key could not be verified; host a key file on your site for full support.
- 422 – the URL does not belong to the host that owns the key.
- 429 – too many submissions; slow down.
Best practices
- Submit when content actually changes, not on a timer.
- Keep sitemap lastmod dates accurate.
- Use Search Console for Google, since it does not take part in IndexNow.
- Let your CMS plugin automate submissions if it supports IndexNow.

Step by step: setting up IndexNow properly
- Generate an IndexNow key (many CMS plugins do this for you).
- Upload the key file to the root of your site, for example
https://example.com/your-key.txt. - Submit URLs or your sitemap including that key.
- Check Bing Webmaster Tools to confirm submissions are received.
Without a hosted key, submissions may be accepted but not verified. With one, participating engines can trust that the request really came from the site owner.
